DAY 1... Brisbane Dubai

After a failed attempt at getting upgraded to Business class, we proceeded to board the plane as Economy passengers. The 14hr flight went so much faster then expected, and we were in Dubai before we knew it...


Dubai really is indescribable... No words will do justice to this place I don't think. Its' futuristic buildings and architecture remind me a little of 'The Fifth Element'. Seems like you're on highways driving to somewhere that never ends... with only a concrete jungle welcoming you.


The heat is something we have never experienced before. Being a desert, we were expecting a dry heat.. but NO! This is far from dry. So so humid.


Despite the fact that we were both amazed and in awe at the sight of Dubai, we failed to realise or educate ourselves about RAMADAM!!!


Long story short... People aren't allowed to eat or drink in public during the day (that even includes chewing gum) Tourists INCLUDED! So... The only places you can get food is in your hotel. And booze can only be served after sunset (a religious tradition which occurs yearly during the month of August).


So we had the bright idea of going on the Big Bus Tours and sit on the uncovered, un-airconditioning upstairs deck of the bus... in 40 degree heat... After the 3rd stop we were hanging for a drink and feed... but no. Every single cafe, restaurant, bar, you name it - any business that has to do with the supply of food or beverages was CLOSED!


After 5 hours of being out, we called it quits and retired to our air conditioned hotel room, and comforted ourselves with none other then room service :)


Having said that, we had an amazing day in Dubai and would have really loved to stay an extra couple of days to explore more of this amazing city. We were lucky enough to visit the Atlantis on Palm Island, which really is something out of this world. Blake and Casey made it up the Buraj Kalifah and said it was amazing...

We leave Dubai and head for Paris tomorrow!
